Barry’s Story

Hi, my name is Barry Hockaday Jr. I’d like to start by saying I’ve lived in Yreka most of my life. Drugs and Alcohol have always been around. Alcoholism and drug abuse runs in my family. I started drinking and smoking when I was really young. I do not remember a time when I was not partying. It came to a point where I was sick unless I had a drink.

One day I was drinking and injured to the point of needing surgery. My doctor at the time prescribed me a pill called Norco. I instantly became hooked, to the point where I was taking 20-25 a day. A while after that the Norco wasn’t working anymore. I felt totally lost in life; I began taking any drug I could get my hands on.

I became sick all the time and didn’t want to do anything unless I had drugs. One day I got the courage to wake up and decided I am not going to be sick anymore. I don’t want to die!!! So I decided to get help. I was sent to detox the next day. After that, rehab. During treatment I began to see a doctor, he gave me medication called Suboxone to help with withdrawal and overall wellbeing.

I can honestly say that if I can make it through then anyone can. No high is worth dying for. I have my family, friends and health back and I would not trade it for anything. I’ve been clean and sober since 2017 now and I couldn’t be happier. I just hope my story will help someone that is lost in a life of drugs and alcohol.
